Mort Runs at USA Track & Field Championships
Emory Mort '01, a former Mercersburg track standout and current faculty member, placed 22nd in the 3000-meter steeplechase June 22 at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis. Mort finished with a time of 8:52.95.

David Grady, who coached Mort during his Mercersburg career, says Mort is the first alumnus in Grady's 13 years at the Academy to compete at the event, which serves as the national-championship meet for track & field in the United States. To qualify for the event, participants must meet a qualifying standard.

"I had a great time," Mort says. "Basically, I ran the way I wanted to run, but I didn't have a good last lap in my legs. So I failed to make the final, but it was awesome to be at the meet."

Mort, who teaches math and has also taught Spanish and chemistry, ran collegiately at Cornell University. He will now set his sights on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, scheduled for July 3, 2008.
